San Pedro--Capt. Lindsay Philpott is

versed seafaring vessels, he
capably speaks about the basic types of
knots used in the maritime field and their historical
application.
As a founder and current president of the Pacific Americas
Branch of the International Guild of Knot Tyers,
Capt. Philpott, authored the book, Knots A Complete Guide. The
organization was founded in 1982
for the advancement of the study
and practice of the art, craft
and science of knotting, past
and present.
An
exceptional speaker, particularly in his area of
passion—knotting and rigging, Philpott regularly teaches in Southern California,
as well as using his voice to
sing sea shanties.
Known by his students as a master of the rope, he teaches people studying
for their Captain’s licenses the full requirements from
navigation and weather prediction, to Rules of the Road and his
specialty, marlinespike seamanship and rigging.
Whenever he sails, he is frequently seen teaching children and
adults how to tie a Monkey’s Fist or a Turk’s Head.
Capt. Philpott holds a 100-ton license from the U.S. Coast Guard
as a Master/Mate and regularly sails with tall ships and is
second mate aboard the brig “Pilgrim” in Dana Point and has been
the Chief Rigger in Los Angeles Maritime Institute’s Topsail
program.
Others who have heard him sing are surprised to discover
this delightful entertainer or shanty man,
is so accomplished in the
nautical world. Philpott frequently
performs on the last Friday of the month at The Whale and Ale
British Restaurant and Pub, singing sea shanties doors away from the Maritime
