It's clear that the women's
clothing store, Chico's, has taken the state by storm. With over 60 stores
opened in a few short years and prices that begin around $40 for a simple
blouse, it's amazing that the chain store for women has done so well. What's the
secret?
First, Chico's introduced an
entire, new size system foreign to US shoppers. The sizes go from 0 to 3 with 3
being the biggest. Some of the pants styles offer .5 increments of sizes, too.
Except for the pants, the clothing tends not to be form fitted for the most
part. Targeting a career woman in the mid-age to older range, the styles
are fashionable, yet not youthful / trendy. Best described as "classic", any
woman could put on a Chico's items and be considered mainstream in her fashion.
Fabrics range from polyester, linen and blends to some cotton and silk. When
going on a trip such as a cruise ship or other travel, Chico's is a woman
traveler's best friend. Some of the styles are dressy, containing special
decorative treatments that dress them up a bit. Still, Chico's carries
mainstay slacks, blouses and jackets that come in conservative colors--black,
tan, brown or blue, and these items are quite appropriate for the California
business casual look. You'll find Chico's stores primarily in newer malls, or
renovations, and in busily trafficked locations. Loyal shopper programs,
constant rotation of styles and items, and full color catalogs mailed to
customers with discounts keep women coming back again and again. In addition to
Chico's fashion, they also have stores called Soma that sell pajamas, lingerie
and underwear, bras, panties, etc.
The amazing thing about
Chico's in California is that while many stores are shuttering their operations
(Ann Taylor Loft, for example, is closing some outlets), Chico's is on a growth
pattern. Anaheim's Garden Walk store, Chino Hills Chico, Glendale's The
Americana at Brand Chico store and Roseville Chico's (near Sacramento), have all
opened during the economic down-cycle in California and the United States. What
apparently stands true for its market and demographic is that the audience
continues to buy clothing. For those women who have become Chico fans, you'll be
glad to know that the corporation's coverage now includes nearly every region of
California. The only areas missing tend to be lacking of large populations
required to support the endeavor. It's nice to know that as a California
traveler, most women can stop at nearly any major city and find a Chico's
offering the styles of clothing, sizes and prices that a mature female shopper
expects.
