Cowabunga Kitesurfing near Piedras Blancas and San
Simeon's Hearst Castle in San Luis Obispo County, California, an
adventure traveler's choice.
Kite
surfing is popular anyplace there are waves—and that includes nearly all
of coastal California. As you head north from Seal Beach with its very
own launch port, you’ll normally see some action along the cliffs near
Carpinteria when the wind is blowing. Keep going and you’ll notice the
wind really whips north of Lompoc and Santa Maria at San Luis Obispo
County’s
Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area (SVRA), formerly Pismo
Dunes SVRA. Located at the perimeter to an extremely popular beach
destination where surfing and weddings hold equal appeal to the visitors
to Pismo Beach, the dunes is a rare, hard-to-find opportunity to get on
a motorized vehicle and ride on the sand at the beach, no less.
You’ll be hard pressed to find other sand dunes and State Vehicle Rec
Areas at a beach. This is really enjoyable (gritty) and unique. We
recommend you book beachfront hotel accommodations next door at Pismo
Beach, or splurge and enjoy our hideaway at Shell Beach, the luxurious
condo beachfront hotel rooms at
Dolphin Bay.
While the contrast of fine digs and rough rides through the sand on
ATVs, Hummers and other vehicles reign at this 15,000-acre
Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes complex, a special bonus is the horseback riding
opportunities and building bonfires on the sand. It’s old fashioned, the
way much of California beaches used to be.
Also on the
Central Coast just a wee bit further north near Hearst Castle and San
Simeon, you'll discover the kite surfers and surfers like some
Cowabunga with their sport. It's country, it's rustic, and it's
absolutely the finest place to enjoy scenery, blue skies and ocean
thrills.
The coast along
Big Sur where steep mountains and cliffs dropped into the abyss, mellows
as you enter Carmel and Monterey coast in Monterey County. In Marina
you'll find a kite surfing and hang gliding place right on the beach to
help get you flying through that fresh Monterey Bay air. It will be
smooth sailing for quite some time and you continue northward to Santa
Cruz, its outskirts where
Davenport is
extremely hang-glide friendly , and on up the coast where
Mavericks surfing blows Hawaii away once a year when when the big
waves (up to 60 feet) are the envy of every surfer, everywhere. The rule
of the road for an elite list of invitees is if you can get there in
time during the 24 hour window in which the contest is organized, you'll
be in for the ride of a lifetime.
