Note: 5 on 5 San Diego has been
canceled this year!
5 on 5. Doesn't matter
what day of the week it falls on, every May 5 in San Diego you
can expect Cinco de Mayo fun. Margaritas, Mexican beers, bands,
dancing, DJs and a street scene to rock you, this event is one
of California's most fun Cinco de Mayo celebrations. Located
just across the border from San Diego is Mexico. That's why San
Diego is the most appropriate spot to celebrate this Mexican
celebration. It doesn't hurt that there's warm year round
weather and a lively beach scene.
Thanks to San Diegoo's
location, the Latin beat and authentic style of showmanship
sported by beautiful Hispanic women has been absorbed by all
cultures and ethnic groups in a celebration that's extremely
popular in Southern California. Skimpy outfits worn by tanned
blondes, brunettes, red-heads, Scottish, Asians, Italians,
Afro-Americans, Amerasians, as well as Hispanics, spice up an
event held in the sizzling streets of Gaslamp Quarter. This
district of San Diego has a long history of entertainment and
accommodations that's amazingly been preserved for people to
enjoy today. It's very own California version of New Orleans
streets, the area is filled with unique buildings, restaurants,
clubs, hotels and shopping. During Mardi Gras, the streets are
closed and admission points are set up for the public to enter
(paid admission), to access the street scene. Once entering,
guests can wander and take in a variety of bands, clubs, foods
kiosks, bar service (21+ only) and socializing. The streets are
lit by spotlights set up for the event, but retain the party
atmosphere as they bathe areas with blue, pink, red and yellow.
While San Diego County
offers several entry points into Mexico, where Americans like to
party on the weekends in cities such as Tijuana and Rosarito
Beach, on special events, many San Diegans and Californians opt
to stay in country and celebrate on the streets of San Diego for
events that include Cinco de Mayo and the popular
Gaslamp Mardi Gras,
held on Fat Tuesday in February.
Like Gaslamp Mardi Gras, this is
an event for those who like to party. It isn't for those who
hate crowds, noise and just plain outdoor music, food and fun.
The street transform into an outdoor music block party with
Mariachi beats, Ballet Folklorico dancers, lots of tasty Mexican
food, icy cervezas and colorful margaritas. The event raises
money for Christie's Place, the host for more than 10 years.
Where to stay: Don't drive on this party night. If you drink, like most
people do, it's easiest to take a hotel room (there are many
right there at Gaslamp.) Its also saves you from having to find
a place to park your car. Some of the hottest new
hotels in Gaslamp include
Hard Rock Hotel,
Horton Grand Plaza &
Hotel Solamar (4 diamond). If you're looking for cheap
hotels, you may have to go away from Gaslamp a little bit.
500 West is one of the cheapest (lowest priced) in
downtown, the nearest perimeter hotel accommodations to Gaslamp. For update
