Featured Event: Huun-Huur-Tu
Siberian Musical Group

CRESCENT CITY -
Huun-Huur-Tu is a musical group. Tuvan overtone singing hails
from the Southern Siberian Republic of Tuva. It is traditionally
performed by soloists, each specializing in their own style of
xöömei. Kaigal-ool Khovalyg, Alexander Bapa, his brother
Sayan Bapa, and Albert Kuvezin founded a quartet called
Kungurtuk, singing the tunes in a new way that offered
broad appeal to audiences. Since their founding group began in
1992, the musicians renamed the ensemble "Huun-Huur-Tu". In 1993
they collaborated with musicians Frank Zappa, Ry Cooder, the
Chieftains and others.
Huun-Huur-Tu tours extensively in the U.S., Europe and Japan.
Preserving Tuvan musical heritage, collaborative works include
compilations with recording artists such as Angelite and
Scottish- Canadian Niall MacAulay on, "Where Young Grass Grows".
Time: 7:30 p.m. Location: Crescent Elk Auditorium, 994 G St.,
Crescent City, CA. Call: (707) 464-1336 .huunhuurtu.com/tours.html
About February 29:
February 29, or leap year's
extra day that comes once every four years (must be able to
divide the year by 4 and get a whole number), has been
associated with folklore and superstitions. One of the most
prominent is that on this day, women can propose marriage
to men in what's termed, The Ladies' Privilege.
Other superstitions such as unusual events happening between midnight
and 1 a.m.—when the veil that allows spirits
to manifest and appear in our before our eyes offer words of
caution that humans not be sucked into the chaos of the other
side. February 29 is considered a day of luck.
Superstitions that babies conceived during that particular 24-hour
stretch or those born on February 29 are fated to be favored by
good fortune.
