| February is an
interesting month in California. In the north and it is
still pretty cool temperature wise. The mountains still
have snow and in fact, are in the heart of ski season.
And, at the beach, you can almost feel spring in the air
as the blossoms on the orange and lemon trees spread a
fragrant scent in the air. Holidays in February
include one of the romance favorites, Valentine's Day.
But first you have to figure out what the weather will
be, so you hurdle through with a proclamation from the
groundhog in PA. On Saturday, February 2, 2008,
Groundhog Day is a day celebrated in Punxsutawney,
Pennsylvania. If a groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil,
sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter
weather. If he does not see his shadow, there will be an
early spring. Wednesday February 6, Ash Wednesday,
is a Catholic celebration relating to Easter.
Thursday February 14 is Valentine's Day. It's a day
to trade cards, gifts such as flowers and chocolate, or
take a mate on a dinner date or romantic escape. The
only official holiday in the United States in February
is on Monday February 18, President's Day.
Schools, banks and government offices take a day off. |

What's new in California in
February 2008? There are countless plays and performances not
shown on this calendar. But the theme for this month might
best be described as spring's blossoming. Whether the blossoms of
love are opening and growing in a romantic Valentine's Day
celebration, or you're celebrating Fat Tuesday Mardi Gras, you'll
find tulips in bloom in San Francisco, and the Chinese New Year
celebrations launching another lunar year recognized as the Year of
the Rat. Pigs are out. What's beautiful in February is the variety
of options. In the mountains you'll find yourself in the heart of
the ski and snowboard season. But in the flatlands and beaches of
California, the blossoms of lemon trees release a fragrance that
simply intoxicates. The natives are feeling the sunshine, smelling
the fragrant air, and springing forth into another glorious summer
of beach events.
