| April in
California includes the push toward summer. Springtime
events and festivals are on the schedule, but the summer
travel season and kids release from school is just weeks
away. International travelers start to increase their
traffic to California during the month of April and
beach hotel availability starts seeing a push.
Some of the events celebrated nationally in April (or
adhered in the case of April 15 tax deadline filing
day), are April Fool's Day, April 1; Earth Day, April
22; Arbor Day, the last Friday of the month; and the
entire month is called National Poetry Month. Unless you
celebrate poetry, this is a fact that may be off your
radar. |

On our calendar, we
find April doesn't necessarily bring showers to
California. Often one of the dry, sunny months, it
brings celebrations of cars, for one. Long Beach Grand
Prix is held each April, and takes to the streets of the
Los Angeles County city. Another annual event in April
is the Auburn Rodeo Weekend. While Auburn, distinguished
as part of California's gold country region, is known as
a tourist attraction throughout the year for its
historic buildings and Old West history, one event looms
large in the hearts of the real cowboys that continue to
operate ranches in northern California's plains and
Sierra foothills. If you can make it to Auburn, the
rodeo week includes the best small town community events
and activities you find.
Finally, April in
California is known for Earth Day celebrations. Santa
Barbara is where Earth Day began. There are so many
celebrations commemorating that event now, we find that
the platform is being used to promote all kinds of
issues ranging from water resources to sustainable
hotels & tourisms, and natural farm practices.
While many
activities and events herald the new year, one
California favorite is Whale Watching. You can park your
car at the roadside vista along Highway 1 in Big Sur and
watch them, or board a boat to the Channel Island and
get views as part of your journey. Better yet, take a
whale watching tour to see the magnificent migrating
gray creatures in the Pacific Ocean. You normally don't
have to travel more than a few miles off coast to watch,
depending on their favorite spots.
Other events in
January that occur annually are localized games, fairs,
festivals and sports. Concerts, plays and theatre are
also quite popular. January is the perfect time to visit
California's museums ranging from a
surfing museum to
California trains. From The Getty to several
presidential libraries, the variety and collections are
world class. Enjoy California in January. It is
one of the best times to explore.
One thing to
consider, like all your travels, please do call first
before going. Some museums actually close their doors
for the winter in the mountain areas. Even the events
get cancelled from time to time and they forget to tell
us.
