2007 Events in California
California's December Calendar is the biggest, most
active offering of parades, tree lightings, open house
welcomings, Nutcracker ballets and holiday concerts.
California Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza and
all the other religious and public
celebrations are in the thousands.
From the tallest live tree lighting in the
US in Ferndale (home to the giant redwoods
and Holly Heifer celebration), to the oldest
lit tree driving district celebration on the
National Register of Historic Places in
Altadena - Christmas Tree Lane, California
has always been a land of extremes. Here we
have the tallest mountain peak and lowest
dessert point all in one county, and the
December weather is anything if it isn't
contrasts.
From the Mammoth Lakes
region with over 240 inches of snow, to Palm
Desert where the temps drop to a cool 76
degrees in the winter, California is for
those who don't mind living on the edge. The
contrasts, color, beauty and twisted sense
of holidays can be as stark as a cactus with
a star ornament hanging it from it, or
stately palms that line the ice rink in San
Jose. Dinner boat cruises are a holiday fave,
as are fundraiser charity dinners with live
and silent auctions, and historical
re-enactments that celebrate California's
Hispanic and native roots such as the
missions, ranchos and adobe luminaria.
Some
things to know before you go: mountain
resorts sell out their condos, hotel rooms
and townhomes during December holidays. Book
early if you hope to have a white Christmas
or New Year's. Also, the lower slopes and
beach front hotels do pretty well in
December, except when it rains. If it is dry
and sunny, your last minute plans will need
to maintain flexibility. For those who
think California is too big and impersonal,
December is the month you'll find warmth and
giving, and small town charm in nearly every
city as the merchants host open houses, and
through the madness of shopping, there's a
spirit of happiness for the warm weather,
sunshine and luxury of being at a California
beach celebration in December.
