Calico Ghost Town Photos and Information - California Desert

photo of Calico Ghost Town California

Calico and Calico Ghost Town are located approximately 10 miles north of Barstow near Interstate Highway 15 between Los Angeles and Las Vegas. The Old West town was re-created from a mix of original buildings over 100 years old and structures created in the style of original properties. Calico Ghost Town provides a haunting glimpse into the stark, lifestyle of the Old West.  At Calico, The Lane House & Museum was opened to the public in May of 2001, by the Chief of the San Bernardino County Regional Parks Division, and the County's First District Supervisor. It was created to provide a facility for Park visitors to learn more about Calico and the former Calico Mining District, as well as the natural history of this 480-acre Mojave desert county Regional Park. To contribute to the preservation of the heritage of San Bernardino County, California.

The Museum is centrally located on Main Street, at one of four late-1880s adobe buildings that have endured over the years. The construction method was "rammed earth," and all four adobes are believed to have been built not too long after the big fire of 1887.

The building has undergone many changes over the years, but visitors can still see such features as transom windows, c. 1930s electrical wiring, and furnishings that belonged to the Lane family that lived here from the 1920s to the 1960s.

Open daily, there is no charge with general park admission.  Telephone: (760) 254-3679. Address: Lane House & Museum, Calico Ghost Town Regional Park P.O. Box 638, Yermo, CA 92398

A narrow gauge railroad operates within town limits and a hardrock silver mine offers up underground exploration. The train provides a slow-moving ride that allows guests to enjoy the landscape, buildings and take photos while riding through the stark desert landscape..

Several restaurants, mercantile stores, a school house, blacksmith shop, and gold panning operation are all open for meandering, taking photos and shopping. The bath house & barber shop displays open daily, and old-fashioned remedies can be viewed at the drug store. Calico's

Dedicated to the memory of Walter Knott, founder of Knotts Berry Farm in Buena Park, the California pioneer worked at the Calico Mine in his youth.  In later years the entrepreneur created a legacy through efforts to maintain historical information and relics of the California Gold Rush. calicotown.com
