Santa Maria Valley Byron Winery is a California Winery offering wine
tasting and purchase of wines.
Santa Maria Valley, located 300 miles south of Napa Valley, features
mild winters combined with cool maritime temperatures perfect for slow
ripening of grapes. The valley is formed by an east-west break in
California's coastal range that includes direct exposure to the ocean.
The water temperature in this region is the southernmost cold water
current from Alaska.
This California Current flows from Alaska until
being diverted out to sea at nearby Point Conception. What this means to
the grapes and wine-growing efforts is that there's a cooling influence
reinforced by deep, cold ocean waters rising to the surface, a localized
phenomenon caused by the unusual configuration of the land, the
direction of wind and the ocean currents. Not only is the weather ideal
for grapes, other crops have thrived in the region for over 100 years
and people find the climate to their liking, as well.
Combined with the types of soils and
seasonal temperatures, Santa Maria Valley is the perfect spot for Pinot
Noir & Chardonnay. Be sure to sample these wines in the many
wine-tasting rooms throughout the region. Some charge a fee and some do
not.
