Butterfly Beach near Santa Barbara, CA

If you find yourself in Santa Barbara County north of LA, don't consider skipping out on Butterfly Beach, also known as the crown jewel of the California Coast -- a local and tourist favorite alike. This 3/4 mile stretch of stunning pure white sand, which features a west-facing coast, perfect for watching the sun set over the water, is an amazing area for almost everyone.

Of course, when the word local is used, most people don't think of the Hollywood elite, however, in Santa Barbara, Butterfly Beach is the perfect spot to see celebrities such as Brad Pitt, Whoopi Goldberg, Charlize Theron, Ellen DeGeneres, Rob Lowe, and so many others. Considering the area is only populated by 100,000 people, there is a great chance that visitors can actually see their favorite stars in person.

When looking at the beach itself, there is no question why it is so often visited by the rich and the famous. The 3/4 of a mile stretch is large enough to stretch out, but definitely not large enough to not have the opportunity to speak with some of the other visitors. Although the beach itself does not offer refreshments or a bathroom, there are many restaurants just across the road (see Restaurants in the Santa Barbara area). For places to stay there are many. Right on the beach is the Four Seasons Biltmore Santa Barbara Resort and there are many other hotels in Montecito nearby. For something more intimate rent a room and have breakfast in a Santa Barbara B&B inn. As for entertainment, although there are often DJs and dancing on the beach after sunset, opportunities for activities are only limited to your imagination.

As for swimming conditions, it generally depends on the day, however the beach uses a flag system to alert visitors whether caution should be taken when swimming in the ocean. As with other beaches, in the winter, extra care should be taken as swells tend to be much higher and can easily sweep a child out into open water. The beach's unique environment also offers some of the best tide pools just waiting to be explored. In addition to this, dolphins are commonly seen just off the coastline.

The beach is readily accessible to travelers of all types as it offers a ramp down to the beach for those travelling with wheelchairs or strollers. It is also next to a bike path, perfect for those wanting a beautiful break during a workout. The beach itself allows for dogs to walk on the sand as long as they are on leashes. The shore is also perfect for those just wanting a leisurely walk, either on their own or with a special someone and gently slopes down into the water.

Located close to scenic Montecito CA, getting to Butterfly Beach is no problem, just take the 101 to Olive Mill Road. Then, at the first stop sign, take a left turn towards the shoreline. Drive parallel to the coast for about 1/4 of a mile. Butterfly Beach should be on the left. Although parking is usually easy to find during weekdays, weekends may pose a more difficult situation, however it should still be available for free on either side of the street. Handicapped parking is generally easy to find and available even during weekends.
