Posted by: Beach Reporter In: california| events

Costa Mesa, Calif.–What if you throw a free concert and nobody comes? That’s not likely to happen when you plan an event at Renee and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall featuring great music and a beautiful setting that concert goers routinely pay up to $100 per concert to watch. This huge, free summer event in which the public lines up for a first come, first serve event featuring Pacific Chorale and organist Frederick Swann is sure to pack the hall again in 2009. Last year the event drew a capacity crowd. Featured songs include a mix of classical and patriotic, with the volunteer chorale group taking stage in Orange County’s newest, most luxurious major concert venue next to Orange County Performing Arts Center.  Doors for the event open at 4:30 p.m. and the concert is set to start around 5. When California Fish and Game Commission passed North Central MPA Regulations on Aug. 5, 2009, recreational fishing and boating communities were disappointed by the Commission’s 3-2 vote in favor of imposing regulations that place 20% of the North Central California coastal prime fishing and boating coastal areas in marine protected areas. Integrated Preferred Alternative (IPA) proposal, a more restrictive plan than a proposal supported by 1,000,000,000 California residents in favor of Partnership for Sustainable Oceans (PSO) 2XA proposal, disappointed the proponents for a friendlier sportfishing climate.

Although disappointed that Proposal 2XA was not selected, the majority of the elements contained in 2XA were included in the proposal selected by the Fish and Game Commission such as fewer closures than other options under consideration, according to Read the rest of this entry »

Microquake in HB–So…?

Posted by: Beach Reporter In: beaches| california| events

Huntington Beach, Calif.–A reported microquake occurred this morning in a tiny spot in Huntington Beach–right near Marina High School, Mario’s Mexican Restaurant, 99 Cent Store, Tire Pros, Von’s, Noah Jewelers, Shack, and other such shopping delights. Rating a mere 1.2 on the Richter scale,  the 4:38 a.m. tug or toss was not felt by those who slept or prepared for another day of work. Located near Edinger and Springdale Streets, it is estimated to have occurred three miles deep. Why does this matter?

It shows us that in California many regions are subject to constant earth movement. This particular area is situated along the Newport-Inglewood fault line that stretches in Southern California mostly along the coast in prime property locales such as Huntington Beach and Newport Beach where ocean digs can cost a cool few million dollars or more.

With signs placed all along this stretch of coastline warning of a tsunami zone, the sudden impact of a tsunami triggered by a large earthquake while residents sleep or in daylight hours as millions would attempt to flee their beach-close homes would create dire consequences that hopefully will not happen.

It’s time for local governments to begin educating their citizens or for the citizens themselves to begin examining how they physically could exit a location to save their neighbors and their own lives with only seconds or minutes of warning. In all likelihood it would be impossible for most to escape. If such a quake happened, say, during rush hour on the 405 Freeway where commuters routinely sit in gridlock as their cars barely move,  more cars trying to escape the beach simply wouldn’t would have no place to go in these low-lying areas with elevations of no more than a few feet above the ocean. There would be no escape.

All of us adults who live in these areas take that calculated risk and know that the likelihood of being killed in a car wreck is much higher, but still, if the signs are in place to warn us, it is time for the citizens to understand and ask how all of this really would work should the big one happen on our shores.
