Julia Morgan, an architect who left an incredible mark with building designs ranging from the world famous Hearst Castle to the breath-taking Asilomar Asilomar, is featured in a unique tour offered by the Friends of Hearst Castle–and you are invited! The event includes three fun-filled and informative days of on-site exploring in three cities. Julia Morgan Bay Area Grand Tour explores the life and legacy of Julia Morgan in 3 Days and 2 Nights in Berkeley, San Francisco & from October 23 to 25, 2010.
In the tradition of the Grand Tour of the 1800s when the well-heeled traveler toured and experienced art, culture, and the broader view, this experience helps you discover the unique life and pioneering career of architect, Julia Morgan.
Here is the itenerary:
- Saturday, October 23 Berkeley & San Francisco.
Tour and lunch at the exclusive Berkeley City Club, escorted by Mark Wilson, lecturer and Julia Morgan biographer.
A walking tour to explore UC Berkeley and several Julia Morgan buildings and private residences in the area.
The famed Fairmont Hotel on Nob Hill, rebuilt by Morgan after the 1906 earthquake, will be your luxurious pied à terre for two nights**. The fun begins with a Welcome Cocktail Reception in the Fountain Room.
- Sunday, October 24 San Francisco
The day begins with a tour of the Fairmont, followed by more San Francisco examples of Julia Morgan’s prolific portfolio.
This evening, enjoy a Gala Cocktail Reception and Dinner in the Julia Morgan Ballroom at the Merchant Exchange Building.
- Monday, October 25 Asilomar
Where eleven of thirteen Julia Morgan designed structures still stand. Her natural style shines forth in the Conference Center’s exposed support beams, horizontal lines, and use of California Redwood and natural stone.
Enjoy lunch and a tour of Morgan’s Asilomar.
