New Living Roof at Berkeley’s Freight & Salvage Coffee House
Posted by: Beach Reporter In: beaches
With the first “living roof” filled with California native plants to provide open space and habitat for birds and other
wildlife, and a new 440-seat concert “listening” room, Berkeley’s Freight & Salvage Coffee House showcases the city’s evolution from urban to a stylish arts and entertainment destination. The historic city and home to University of California Berkeley, needed a facelift. But rather than tear down the old, local planners have opted for keeping the heart & soul of the place, and making it shine with grace. The renowned music venue for folk and world music concerts expanded, added green practices to its operations, and now includes additional performance space seating for 60 to 70 people, a café, and six classrooms. Recent acts include Al Stewart. Information: 2020 Addison Street, Berkeley, CA 94704. Tel: (510) 644-2020. freightandsalvage.org
Where to stay: The landmark Hotel Shattuck recently underwent an extensive, multimillion-dollar renovation and has been transformed into the newest boutique hotel in the Bay Area. The new restaurant FIVE, earth-friendly amenities, on-demand water heating, and a hotel recycling program don’t convey the beauty and elegance that the new room decor offers. Ignore the old 1 diamond rating for the hotel on our website. Look at the photos and you’ll be convinced those diamonds will be upgrade to three, at least. For trips to Berkeley, visitberkeley.com
