Placer County, Calif.–It doesn’t matter if you’re a Valley Girl, a city boy, a surfer or stock broker. When the weekend comes, Placer County, California opens its arms with humor and song in an extravaganza of country living. The annual Cowpoke Fall Gathering Nov. 12-15, 2009 at the Blue Goose Fruit Shed in Loomis (take Horseshoe Bar Rd. to stoplight at Taylor,) features story telling, singing, and the best stage entertainment this side of Texas. Apple Pie Contest, a Santa Maria style Barbeque, complete with beans, tortillas & salsa, and the likes of Baxter Black, have folks coming back year after year to hear poetry cowboy style.
I fancy myself more of city folk, but I had the pleasure of attending this event several years ago and wish I could be there this weekend to try out one of the horse drawn wagon rides, some hot apple pie, and a step back in time to a simpler life. If you’ve never seen the cowpoke singers and cowboy story-tellers, they are in the vein of A Prairie Home Companion’s Garrison Keillor. They talk a bit. They sing some, and their stories often rhyme.
The best way of getting to Loomis for distance travelers is to fly into Sacramento and rent a car, taking a pleasant drive over to Placer County’s Gold Country. There isn’t much in the way of accommodations in Loomis, but there’s a great variety of modern digs at a variety of Roseville hotels. -cowpokefallgathering.com
