Island Romance: California’s Catalina Island Capture Our Hearts

Posted by: Beach Reporter In: beaches| california| travel

Californians love their islands–and so do tourists. From the romance of the Avalon Ballroom (shown in the photo above) where big bands performed in concerts and dances, to the hillsides dotted with colorful houses, the island exudes charm. It usually begins the moment you arrive and begin to step off a boat. As you look into the water (normally a crystal blue where all sorts of fish can be seen swimming) you realize that there’s so much to see and do. Glass bottom boat rides allow you to gaze at the fish and learn about their habits. You can also rent some snorkeling or scuba gear and even be close enough to reach out and touch the fish!

But the innertubing, kayaking, swimming, sailing, and other water sports are just one aspect of the island passion.

For those seeking tours, there are a few ways to few the island treasures. One method for getting around is a golf cart rentals. You’ll seldom see cars on the island, and cars are generally only allowed by license for residents.) A tour that can’t be accessed by golf cart takes you into the wilder parts of the island, preserved for all to enjoy.

Catalina Island is an oasis of charming shops, restaurants, and simply ways. It’s a beautiful place that takes you back to an old-fashioned lifestyle–who can believe it is part of busy L.A.?

Best of all, you can leave from Long Beach on their boats operated by Catalina Express. Boats go all day, back & forth to the island. Cost is around $64.50 round trip. Or you can leave on the morning boat out of Newport Beach on Catalina Flyer. It goes around 9 a.m. and gets back around 5:30 p.m. each day. It costs about $59.

Catalina Island isn’t just for tourists. Local residents who have never been fall in love over again and again once they visit. Some have told us it becomes a regular weekend routine from their jobs to escape to island, then come back renewed and ready for another work week. Those types of people tend to go for the hiking. There are some excellent trails through wilderness areas to enjoy that include stunning vistas.
