It’s a Nice Day With Forever Views from Signal Hill
Posted by: Beach Reporter In: beaches| california

The only city 100% surrounded by another city in the US (we’ve been told) is Signal Hill, California, surrounded by Long Beach. Signal Hill is named for its hilltop location where Native Americans once communicated with smoke signals visible all the way to Catalina Island over 20 miles distance.
For nearly a century Signal Hill has been known for its oil production, which continues today. While many of the oil fields are being replaced with homes, you will find the oil pumpjacks in parking lots of shopping malls, next to Curley’s Cafe where you can get a shoe shine and listen to a blues band play, and behind your $1.5 million dollar home on a hill overlooking downtown Los Angeles high-rise buildings or Long Beach with its Pacific shoreline.
On a clear day, take a stroll along Skyline Drive and soak up the forever views. You’ll find lots of people sharing the same vistas and enjoying them with romantic hugs, a picnic, or just a gaze.
Where to go: Located just a few miles from Long Beach Airport, you will find Skyline Drive off of Cherry Avenue between 405 Freeway and Pacific Coast Highway.
