America’s Fascination with California Beaches

California Beaches–When the annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Competition arrives each summer, it’s no surprise that a Californian wins or comes in the top two or three contestants. America simply loves their wieners and buns and the press coverage of the event spans all the way around the globe when the Japanese take home the prize.
The coverage of wieners and buns in the news go straight to the heart of America’s fascination and hang-up with what’s commonly referred to wieners and buns, parts of the human anatomy that are prohibited from being displayed at California’s and other beaches around the USA. While one group is fighting a legal battle to be able to sunbathe nude at a small portion of a state-operated beach in San Onofre, other parts of the US have an idealized vision of California as a mecca for nude beach lifestyle. While that view may be distorted to some extent, California got its name from a fictional paradise in a novel known as Califia. California continues to represent the stuff that dreams are made of, even when the chips are down as state parks and beaches try to shutter nude beach activities, and also potentially face closures of those lesser trafficked beaches & parks due to budget cuts.
It caught our eye and interest when a story made the news that a guy from Milwaukee dreams of being at Black’s Beach in San Diego, known for its clothing-optional crowd. Holding a sign over his mid-waste area as if to cover up bare parts, his story is about loving to be nude, but not having any place to go and express his freedom. Seeking “warm sunny southern breeze to caress my short hairs,” the guy goes on to claim that Black’s Beach is the largest nude beach in the United States. We have not heard that before, but will check it out.
Black’s Beach San Diego’s upscale La Jolla, sits beneath the cliffs where luxury resorts, Glider Port, Torrey Pines Golf Course and other attractions are served up very prim and proper. The beach is slightly hard to access to the general public, as are most nude beaches in California (the few that exist).
Our gent from Milwaukee mentions the volunteer Black’s Beach Bares that helps to keep the beach clean, safe, and maintained. He’s so impressed with the California dream that he said he’s had one failed attempt to get to this rare Southern California nude beach but his VW broke down on the way. He has this wonderful idealized image of basking nude in the warm California sun, and thanks to California’s promise of sunshine and warm beaches, hopefully his reality when he arrives will not disappoint him.
