California Woodie Cars Come of Age
Posted by: Beach Reporter In: world
If you pick one car to best represent California beach lifestyle, you better pick a woodie!
It’s the “wood”, hands down, says Randy Lyford, who owns a green 1950 woodie– and it brings back memories. If he had to favor his wife or his car, well it would be kinda hard. The two “girls” offer a lifetime of memories that go hand in hand. His courtship to his wife and their dating life evolved around beaches, surfing and woodies, to be precise. They went to the drive-in, the proms, and so many things in the beloved woodie that this surfing dude still cleans and cares for lovingling.
So appreciated and adored is the woody that the California Automobile Museum in Sacramento is launching an exhibit July 1 to celebrate the California icon. Called Woodies, Wheels and Waves, the exhibition features eight varieties of Woodie models from the early 1930s through the 1960s. Detailing the evolution of the Woodie Wagon, Ford, Pontiac and Dodge are represented in the collection. To compliment the vehicles, vintage surfboards and memorabilia will also be on display. calautomuseum.org
