What Do People Put in Their Backpacks?

That question struck me in the face as I wandered on a California pier and saw a furry-faced dog staring back. He was riding in a backpack and would not otherwise have been allowed onto the public structure as the posted sign at the entrance to the pier said dogs are prohibited.
