California Dog Beaches and Pet Friendly Parks include some fantastic
locations along the California Coast where you can actually let your
dog romp and play with other pets in the ocean, streams or parks and
forests. There's nothing more joyful than playing and getting
exercise with man's best friend, the pet. Dog ownership is estimated
to be 25% of the populations and if those figures play out in
California, there are well over 9 million dogs in California alone!
No wonder you'll see so many dogs at the dog parks and beaches! As
owners increasingly seek places to take their pets in urban
environments, they may consider looking to European cities for
solutions. For instance, it has been well over 30 years that cities
in Switzerland have devoted pet squat areas in public places,
allowing dogs on a walk with an owner to do their biz. When you
visit a California dog friendly beach, watch the practices of owners
and act accordingly. Beware of taking small children to such beaches
where they may play with the sand and put things in their mouth.
It's possible to have fun and share these treasured resources with a
pet.
Now for the fun
stuff: In Southern California, some of the favorite
places to take pets to the beach include Ocean Beach Dog
Beach in San Diego, Laguna and Newport Beach beaches
before 9 a.m. and after 5 p.m. (check our site to
confirm), Huntington Beach Dog Beach and Long Beach Dog
Beach. On the Central California coast dogs are
permitted on many beaches...check signage as you enter.
And in Northern California, while dogs are permitted on
most beaches, signage alerts pet owners to local
restrictions in areas where elephant seals and other
wildlife habitats may be disturbed.
Be sure to check local regulations such as leash laws
before taking your pet to a destination that you believe is
dog-friendly. Sometimes the once-friendly dog beach or park has been
removed. While the trend is toward greater services and
facilities for pets, dog clean-up and dog bites have causes closures
due to liability issues. So the word to the wise is be nice and keep
an eye on your pet. Don't let your dog terrorize other animals
and especially keep a watchful eye on humans nearby. Dog bites
are costly propositions. Top breeding dog bites in the U.S. include:
Pit Bulls, Rotweilers, German Shepherds, Huskies,
Doberman Pinschers and Chow Chows, accounting for 44% of
bites. Children under 10 are most frequently
bitten by dogs with the face area the top point of
attack. Every 40 seconds in the US a person is
seeking treatment for a dog bite.
