San
Buenaventura State Beach is one of those spellbinding,
glistening diamonds that overlooks a set of islands that either
shine in the afternoon sun, or fade in the haze. Either way, San
Buenaventura SB is meant to be enjoyed for all its views, its
sand and amenities that make it one of our favorite coastal
getaways.
Who wants a
hotel smack dab at the beach? I
do.
Who wants
to sip rum drinks in the late afternoon on the pier's end
cafe and restaurant, or let the kids swing at the sun rises?
I would like a sunset cocktail, thanks!
With a
boardwalk fronting the beach, joggers, walkers, bicyclists and
surrey rentals move up and down the strand to the joy of all who
make a visit to this treasured coast.
The beach
itself includes swimming, a kids playground, surfing and picnic
opportunities. Anchored by the 1,700-foot pier with its wooden
planks, you'll feel like you step back in time to an
old-fashioned, simple life meant to be enjoyed. Beach-equipment
rentals, a snack bar, restaurant and bait shop, public
restrooms and outdoor shower are all conveniently located in the
heart of it all just blocks and walking distance to downtown.
From Highway 101 you can exit Seaward Avenue and turn right onto
Harbor Blvd. There are two entrances to the beach. There's one
directly on your left and another half mile on the left where
the pier and restaurant are located.
You can
actually hop aboard the Amtrak train or disembark nearby, close
to the Ventura County Fairgrounds, and you can walk across the
bridge to get your favorite morning Starbucks, or dine at the
Busy Bee Cafe. You can also shop till you drop. Back at the San
Buenaventura Beach you'll find surfers constantly riding the
waves out at Surfers' Point Park or you may notice seagulls from
the Channel Islands making stops and checking out the mainland
treats in Ventura before they head up and down the coast.
You'll often see sunshine and good times at this two mile
stretch of sand, one of a handful of beaches that comprise
Ventura, the city of good fortune.
We've stayed
in Ventura several times and have never grown tired of its aura.
It is far enough away from L.A., close to Santa Barbara, and
very much its own creature that makes you feel (when you
arrive), that you could easily stick around. Most of us aren't
so lucky, but we can grab our moments and one of the easiest to
latch onto is this beach adjacent to US Highway 101 between Los
Angeles and San Francisco.
