Huntington Beach, Calif.--Depicting
the scenes of a beach city and its history, you'll find a tile mural at
Pier Plaza, Huntington Beach. Located next to the Huntington Beach Pier
and parking lot, the mural includes a woman in a bikini, lifeguard and
junior lifeguard, dapper gent with a seashell in his pocket, stylish
walking cane and panama hat, a California grizzly, a couple sipping
coffee or tea with an oil derrick behind them, and a lady jogger with a
bird from the wetlands.
This commissioned work was created
from a man who is no longer with us, Terry Schoonhoven. He was a fine
artist and left a visual display that brings smiles to tourist
vacationing in Huntington Beach, as well as local residents, visitors
and even students.
You'll find this colorful art work
that is comprised of ceramic, hand-painted tiles at Pacific Coast
Highway and Main Street, Huntington Beach, CA. It was unveiled as part
of a Pier Plaza celebration in 1998. Bands played, dignitaries spoke and
a program was even printed up. Having
photographed this mural dozens of times minimum, we can say that it's
all about lighting and angle.
But for the creative types, add
some additional objects for depth, and the mural takes on a whole new
look and meaning. Open for viewing 24/7, the actual hours of the
parking lot next to where it sits are 5 a.m. to midnight daily.
