A surf statue in Huntington Beach
has people up in arms. No, it's not the naked surfer statue, but the
Duke Kahanamoku statue in which people paw, place items on the man and
general get in his face for a photograph.
Located on the corner of Pacific
Coast Highway and Main Street in front of Huntington Surf and Sport, the
statue was commissioned by the same gent who shaped and made Ultimate
Challenge. Edmond Shumpert used to live in the region and loved surfing.
His current sculptures and
commissions are mostly of sports heroes or other people and shapes, but
on rare occasion he'll receive a call asking to come up with something
for California's surf scene.
Next to the statue and surrounding
it are hand and foot prints and autographs of the top surfers around the
globe. They get honored each year in the plaza area sponsored by the
surf clothing and surf board store, HSS.
