Surf Henge is a stop
along the surfing map attraction offerings.
Location: Pacific Coast Highway and Beach Boulevard
at coastal entrance to Huntington Beach City Beach.
Considering
the glued-on seashells fell off in the first year,
it's a good thing they opted to not pipe in the the
sounds of the sea at this giant concrete slab that
commemorates surfing in Huntington Beach.
Surf Henge,
two columns of cement with a cement surfboard
balanced symmetrically atop them, sits in a big sand
lot. The concept, we presume, was to base the design
on Stonehenge, a prehistoric monument in Wiltshire,
England. Stonehenge is composed of earthworks
surrounding a circular setting of large standing
stones. After Huntington Beach's version was
unveiled, A very clever chef, Adam Navadi, across
the street at
Hyatt Huntington Beach Resort and Spa, created
his own cheese plate of gourmet cheeses shaped like
this structure that he named
Cheese
Henge.
Public art can
be great, or it can show the difficulty in making
decisions by committee. Surf Henge was one such
project that got overworked in the planning process.
The result is....whatever you think.
It is what it
is. And it greets visitors to Huntington Beach. Many
say they hardly notice it. Others think it's cool.
Some think it is ugly. But a piece of art was needed
in the spot, and this is what Huntington Beach's
best minds selected and got.
Along the
shores and on our
surfing
map, you'll find some better pieces--no contest,
in our thinking.
