Surf City Nights
was conceived as a new event in 2007 to promote
family activities in Downtown Huntington Beach,
California. Surveys found that many adult
residents and visitors to this Orange County
destination often drove by and didn't stop at night
because of Main Street's appearance.
To address this
concern, the City of Huntington Beach invested as
partners with a recently-formed Huntington Beach
Downtown Business Improvement District (HBDBID), and
created a weekly street closure event, plus five
special weekend events during the year.
Working in
conjunction with an appointed liaison / director of
HBDBID, the partnership was established and in
September 2007 the City Council of Huntington Beach
voted to fund the partnership by helping pay for the
expense of launching such a large program.
Like over 100
downtown business improvement districts, chambers of
commerce and certified California farmer's market
organizations, the HBDBID, now seeks to promote the
downtown as an entertainment venue.
Surf City Nights
is but one event held each Tuesday on the first
through fourth blocks of Main Street. It
includes a farmer's market, free street
entertainment such as musical talent, bounce houses
for kids, food vendors cooking and selling fresh
chicken or meats, and free parking.
For those seeking
a free evening of entertainment, you can park your
car at the city garage and stroll Main Street each
Tuesday night from 5 to 9 p.m. (major holidays
excluded). Info: www.hbdowntown.com
