Skating by The Sea
holiday ice rink on the
beach at Hotel del
Coronado is one big, icy
treat. Kids skate in
their shorts and tees as
the days are sunny and
warm. But out on the ice
it's a chilly frozen
slice, mounted on a
platform above the sand.
From the opulent
Thanksgiving buffets at
Coronado Island's
Hotel
del Coronado to the
Thanksgiving weekend
hotel lighting, San
Diego doesn't let up
with holiday fun to keep
you on the run.
Annually the hotel is
lit with thousands of
lights, a tradition
originating from the
hotel's claim as one of
the first hotel
properties with
electricity.
Skating by The Sea began
in 2004 as a unique
Southern California
experience overlooking
the Pacific Ocean. There
are
numerous ice skating
rinks in California
but this Coronado Island
is probably the
southernmost outdoor
rink at the beach, and
it is not without
challenges. One
challenge in
building outdoor ice
rinks in Southern
California is getting
the water to freeze. It
takes some time to get
it going as the sun
beats, providing
challenges. But once the
ice is solid and you can
skate, the fun never
stops. From November 21
to December 16, 2007,
for instance, three-hour
skating sessions will be
offered daily from 2 to
5 pm and 6 to 9 pm. A
special matinee skating
sessions from 11 am to 1
pm will occur on
weekends and holidays.
From December 17 to
January 1, 2008, all
three skating sessions
will be offered daily.
3-hour sessions cost $20
for adults and $15 for
kids (ages 10 years and
under), 2-hour matinee
sessions cost $15 for
adults and $10 for kids
(ages 10 years and
under). Skate rental is
$5 per person. A portion
of the 2007 skating
proceeds will benefit
the Make-A-Wish
Foundation® of San
Diego. Location: 1500
Orange Ave., Coronado,
CA. Call: 800

In addition to the skate
zone, enjoy the Holiday
Festival
(Wednesday, November
28). The Del will
feature a special event
for the whole family -
Holiday Festival…A
Family Celebration. In
addition to the outdoor
ice-rink, kids of all
ages can visit with St.
Nick and his elves at
Santa’s Village and
enjoy holiday booths
with games and prizes.
The resort’s 100,000
twinkling white lights
will provide a magical
backdrop for the
evening’s festivities.
There are numerous
holiday events
throughout the season at
Hotel del Coronado. Look
