Secret Samurai, a San Diego-based
band has performed throughout Southern California. They often return to
concert performances at Huntington Beach's Surfin Sundays concert
series.
Secret Samurai certainly holds
some secret devices to capture their audience and them energized. With
the band's debut CD, GUN-SHO-GUN, we discovered that while surfing is a
major theme genre, influences range from traditional and no-wave
progressive reverb-drenched surf to Middle Eastern sagas.
Ryan Ruiz & Steve Van Wyk formed
the band in 2005 after a decade long presence, Surf Report, ended its
reign. Moving with ease between themes and styles, guitarist Ryan Ruiz
has played guitar for 25 years (must have been a baby when he started),
and uses these classics: American Vintage Reissue '62 Fender Jazzmaster;
American Vintage Reissue '62; Fender Stratocaster; 1967 Dual Showman
Amp; Mid-sixties 2x12 Bandmaster Cabinet with Weber 12F150T Ceramic
Speakers; Early 90s Fender '63 Reissue Reverb Tank.
Steve-O learned to play on a
Peavey Patriot but all Parts Precision Bass; Gallien-Krueger 800RB Amp
and Ampeg 4x10" Cabinet.
Secret Samurai has a great tour
schedule with many appearances in their native land of San Diego,
California. Some bars and clubs where you might find them include:
San Diego's The Tiki House, The Bar Pink Elephant and the Zombie Lounge.
Orange County and Los Angeles County residents have opportunities to see
them peform at night clubs and Surfin Sundays concerts in downtown
Huntington Beach.
Their website seems updated (last
time we checked) and is a great place to start looking for their next
gig near your home or vacation. secretsamurai.org
