San Diego--Just
south of Imperial
Beach and right up to the fence where the Mexican border at Tijuana
sits is Border Field State Park and Beach. Like driving into some sort
of war zone, there are mega-spotlights that are turned on at night to
light the park and fields nearby to discourage illegal traffic into the
U.S. from Mexico.
Border Field State Park is worth a visit,
however, for its interesting attractions--the beach, the fence that runs
into the ocean between the two countries, and a peak through the fence
to see the Bull Ring on the Mexico side of the border.
One time we spoke to the people through the
fence--many who spoke English. It was quite interesting. Some live in
San Diego and go over the border on weekends to visit their families
living in Tijuana. They take them to this park to enjoy the beach and
grass lawns, or to take in a bull fight.
Be sure to check the California State Parks
before hoping to drive your car and enter by car. While the park is open
to bicyclists, pedestrian traffic and horseback, sometimes the car
admission isn't possible due either to winter flooding, or to budge
cuts. There are public restrooms at Monument Mesa. parks.ca.gov
