A
charming business association helped
turn a deteriorating shopping region
into a wonderfully decorated
boutique shopping street with
planters that include seasonal
flowers such as the poinsettias
shown in the picture.
It's
Christmas in California. So where
are you going to go to shop?
Malls do their best at this time of
year, but the outdoor plazas have
become more popular, thanks to the
warm weather and enjoyable boutiques
and restaurants that enhance a
shopping experience.
On Balboa Island, part of Newport
Beach, you can drive up the road
just a mile or less to Fashion
Island. It does extremely well. But
for more intimate shopping that
offers an experience in which you
can wander along canals, walk along
the bay and take a ferry from the
peninsula to the island, check out
Balboa.
Pictured above is a planter in a
small plaza with a jeweler, women's
clothing boutique and pilates salon.
We chose this photo for the
poinsettia Christmas gallery because
it makes unusual use of poinsettias,
growing them amongst succulents that
thrive in the region. Set in a
planter that sometimes is a fountain
filled with water, the holiday
display is delightful. The brilliant
red poinsettias accent the greenery
that wraps around them. The effect
is "Christmas."
And for decorators seeking fresh
ideas, this one was well executed
and worthy of consideration. What
works about the concept is the more
subtle colors of the plants that
enhance, rather than compete or
detract from the poinsettia's
brilliant blooms.
