The sound of music is the theme of a boat cruise tour called Cruise of
Lights in California. One of over 50 boat parades for the holidays, this event
is a bit different. It includes people hopping aboard boats for rides around the
harbor to see the lights.
Sleigh bells ring at the Cruise of Lights.
Music chimes into the night, broadcast to passers by on boats watching with
delight. The event is stages annually and has been for 40+ years as a way to
raise money for kids.
There have been a few years where the
event almost lost its mooring. One year it was tough to get insurance for the
privately owned vessels donated for the parade. Thankfully, that hurdle was
overcome and the show went on.
Cruise of Lights is held in December each
year and its music to the ears of children who don't have access to music in the
public schools. If you have a boat, you can cruise on into the Huntington
Harbour to observe this event (temporary mooring and a few slips are available
on limited basis at Peter's Landing Marina within the harbor, or you can try
Sunset Marina for private launch. But for those who just want to enjoy the ride
and not have to drive, you can purchase tickets at cruiseoflights.org.
