This Dodge Ram and its passengers in the Sunset Beach
parade seek to hire reindeer. No experience required.
Sunset Beach, Calif.--
Reindeer are in huge demand each California Christmas. From
running sleighs on dry land to taking photos with Santa, they have
to be trucked into the beach destinations for the gigs, so you only
see them annually at the Seal Beach Pier during a Santa visit.
In Sunset Beach next door, a
parade entry advertises, "Now Hiring Reindeer, No Experience". A
white Dodge Ram with a pair of work boots draped from a lighted
wreath in the front announces the arrival of another kooky Sunset
Beach parade entry. Filled with happy folks both in the cab
and standing in the back, they're all dressed in Christmas garb,
where red Santa caps with the white, faux fur trim and they wave and
yell, "Merry Christmas" as the pass be houses along the strand.
Sunset Beach has seen the
parades come and go. From time to time when they feel in the mood
they'll hold a special Halloween Bow Wow canine parade, or maybe
even a 4th of July march around the block. The one event that's had
a bit of longevity in this zany unincorporated town is the NO
Parade. To participate next year, just ask around at the post office
a couple weeks before Christmas. Then plan your garland, your
lights and your vehicle or yourself. There's no fee to enter, no
rules in particular and no limits to your imagination, should you
opt to join in the fun.
