A classic Southern California scene captures the other side of The OC. The picture shows a classic VW bus parked in front of Beach Ball Cocktails and Blackie's, two local favorite hangouts at the beach in Newport Beach.

Newport Beach takes its vehicles seriously. From the import car dealers lining Pacific Coast Highway -- Ferrari, Mercedes and luxury  automobiles, to custom hot rods, woody cars and this classic VW bus shown in the photo above, you gotta have style when you drive the mean streets of The OC's Newport.

When you see such perfect art forms as the picture above, a car with a two-tone melon-red-on-white faded painted job that perfectly matches the colors of the signage, lamp post and awning of Beach Ball Cocktails, you have to wonder if there's a relationship between the two beyond the evident imagery afforded those who pass by.

The location is classic California. It's the parking lot next to Newport Pier on the peninsula in Newport Beach. A row of cool little restaurants and shops serve the local populace and visitors who stay in the two hotels along this strip of sand beach facing the Pacific Ocean.

In addition to a parade of custom, classic and luxury vehicles that pass through this lot, you'll see a constant stream of bicycles passing on the jog/bike path. It really is a blast, visiting this wonderful step-back in time next to the Dory Fishermen's stand.
