Monterey Canning Co. Picture
at Monterey Bay California
Monterey Canning is the
original building where the canning of sardines occurred in the early to
mid-20th century. At one time sardines were plentiful in the seas near
California, and Monterey was the heart of this canning industry. Jobs
in factories were plentiful and a local population enjoyed the labors of
their efforts with a lifestyle described in novels by the late renown
fiction writer, John Steinbeck.
Like many placed in the
California that served the world with various natural resources (lumber,
oil, fish, farm goods), when the supplies vanished, the local economies were
required to shift focus to other opportunities and industries. Tourism
became the prominent industry in Monterey, and today, the former cannery is
filled with shops and hotels.
Perhaps tourists love it
so much because of the character that remains in the buildings and bays
where cement pilings from old cannery buildings crumble into the sea.
For those seeking a
unique getaway, Monterey is a good bet for a pleasurable time.
Where to stay:
Monterey
Hyatt Regency with its larger rooms (many rooms offer golf course
views) and ambience or downtown
Marriott
