Highway 101, one of the earliest
Interstate Highways connecting California,
runs parallel to the Pacific Ocean in Pismo
Beach. On the road sign above on Highway 101
you'll see distances from Pismo Beach.
Pismo
Beach is located along Highway 101 in San
Luis Obispo County. The highway intersects
the city, with many of the most expensive
ocean view homes set on the steep hills on
the east side of the highway overlooking the
101 and Pacific Ocean. Also on that side of
the road is the Pismo Beach City Hall and a
McClintock's restaurants with the carved
statue of a larger-than-life cowboy.
Many
new homes and commercial enterprises are
being built along that side of the highway,
as the ocean front properties have been
firmly planted since the early 1900's. On
the west side of the highway you find the
downtown, pier, hotels, arcades, shops, lots
of dining, Prime Outlets outdoor shopping
mall, and the beautiful beaches of Pismo
Beach.
From
Pismo Beach's Highway 101 access, you'll
find (according to this road sign on the
northbound lanes) San Luis Obispo 10 miles
away, Salinas 135 miles, and San Francisco
242 miles north.
If you
get lost, need a pit stop with public
bathrooms and some maps or visitors guides,
a California Welcome Center is located at
the Pismo Beach Prime Outlets. Exit
Five Cities Drive to access the shopping
center with its welcome center for
travelers.
The photo
above is roughly located just south of the
spot featured on the map shown below. If you
are drowsy and need a place to stay, you
won't find better views than the hotels
along this stretch of 101 in Pismo & Shell
Beach. The prices are fairly
reasonable, considering the location. But
for a little less money, stay south of here
in
Arroyo Grande on the east side of the
highway.
