Interstate Highway 101 at Rincon Beach California

Looking from Rincon Point to Interstate Highway 101 in Ventura near the county line of Santa Barbara County, you can see a tour bus, trucks, cars and the Amtrak train offer several options for travel.

Standing at Rincon Point and beach (take Bates Road exit heading north and go under toward the ocean to the parking lots), you can see the oil pier to the south and the mountains that line the interstate highway.  Most of us have tried the Amtrak train between Los Angeles or San Diego and Santa Barbara or San Francisco. It can be an uneventful trip, or it can make you never want to ride again. Unfortunately, all of us who have tried it have a story that causes us to decide we'll drive a car instead.

From long stops, many stops, and wait on the tracks for other trains to pass, to broken air conditioning, rock slides, road closures and other such problems, this stretch of road has, indeed experience a variety of situations that have impacted an Amtrak trains. Like air travel, a few measures will help your trip on the highways by car or riding on a train more pleasurable. Give yourself extra hours, should the ride take longer than expected. Bring things to read, snacks in your pack and just be prepared for whatever comes your way by having a good attitude. There is no way to access Rincon beach from the train you see. You would have to get off the train south in Ventura or north in Santa Barbara, each 14 miles distance from this bend in the road.

There are no restaurants or gas stations at this exit, but you'll find them just a few miles away in La Conchita and Carpinteria.
