Leave it to my friend,
Barbara to find Gypsy Den. Never mind that she lives in
Sacramento and just dropped into Orange County for a meeting. We
have this arrangement that she drives me around when I visit
her, and I drive her around when she visits me. So Barbara took
me on this journey from Irvine where the airport and her hotel
were, to the heart of downtown Santa Ana. The banners
announce you are visiting the Artists Village. I've long read
about this village but visiting did not yield strong evidence of
galleries and shops to visit and look at art.
The artwork does, however,
seem apparent on the walls of several clubs and shops, including
this very cool spot, Gypsy Den. As you enter the red brick
building with ivy growing along its walls, you think to
yourself, this is too cool to be Orange County. It looks old,
moody, and maybe it actually has some history.
Entering a dark restaurant
lit only by the filtered light from sheer curtains draped over
windows, the restaurant is filled with a large counter where
bakery goods and a menu for sandwiches and foods greets you.
Then there's the sign I read that said, "Don't let your friends
drink Starbucks." Oh my gosh! This is Barbara to a tee.
That's her saying and her policy, keeping me away from Starbucks
coffee to the point of annoyance.
Most everything in Gypsy
Den is made from scratch. Sandwiches such as Roasted Eggplant or
Cream Cheese & Olive; Vegetable Lasagna, Soft Tacos, Garden
Quiche, Scrambled Eggs, Muffins, roasted coffee and desserts
such as Creme Brulee, Cheesecake, Carrot Cake and drinks ranging
from Italian sodas, a variety of teas, special sodas and coffee
blends are some of the temptations that you won't pass up when
entering the den of pleasure.
Entertainment turns the
daytime half-filled shop into a standing-room-only happening
place at night with poetry, bands, singers, guitarists and
anything cool and mellow. Twice a week open mic signups give you
a shot and showing your musical talent, or you can try to get a
gig there.
