House & Children's Party is an annual
event celebrating the Christmas and
winter holiday season with a Gingerbread
contest that has been a part of
Coyote Point Museum's history for 27
years. Coyote Point Museum, 1651 Coyote

Shown
in the picture above is one contest
entry in which gingerbread houses were
constructed and an entire environment
created. Containing beach fun with palm
tree cookies, teddy bears (cookies)
wearing swim wear, playing in water,
surfing, sunbathing and entering
delicious gingerbread houses, the
creation makes you want to dive in to
create your very own gingerbread world.
Marshmallow snowmen in front little
gingerbread houses topped with candy
coated roofs, chocolate windows, and
delicious doors shows the mastery and
creativity in the Coyote Point Museum
Gingerbread Contest.
To
keep things stirred up, different themes
may be introduced from year to year, so
it was no surprise the in 2007
contestants were encouraged to create
environmental exhibits. The museum
wisely decided that walking the talk was
a best practice for the needs of an
environmental educational institution.
Gingerbread Contest's think "green"
directive offered opportunities for
families to learn, explore and teach
visitors about green practices and
animal habitats through their very own
contest entries.
Gingerbread: Design an
environmentally-friendly house out of
edible or natural materials. You can use
traditional gingerbread, dog biscuits or
bird cake recipes for inspiration.
Wildlife Habitat: Design a habitat for
your favorite Coyote Point Museum animal
made from materials found in nature or
gingerbread.
To
further add to the fun, recipes were
provided by the Museum staff in the form
of a basic dog biscuit dough recipe, or
bird recipe for gingerbread material.
We've included the bird seed recipe
because it is something you can make at
home and use in your own backyard. It
simply includes (1) cup each of yellow
cornmeal, rolled oats, wild bird seed,
sunflower seed and chunk style peanut
butter. Melt suet over low flame and
stir in ingredients till blended. Then
pour into paper-lined muffin tine and
chill until hardened. These bird
cupcakes will delight your family for
hours, watching birds discover a
delicious treat and invite their
families to check it out in your yard.
