Corona del Mar - As you descend from the hill above the beach at Corona del Mar, you can gaze out to the ocean maybe see a group of ladies or men sitting under umbrellas at a little table, playing cards.

Situated in a mellow bay, this Newport Beach neighborhood once enjoyed a reputation as a top surfing spot on the California coast. That was before the jetties were built, channels dredged and a harbor created. Island were created and homes were built. And the waves were gone.  Today the bay is a boater's paradise, a family destination and neighborhood recreation area.

On the beach shown above, there are volleyball courts, bonfire pits, treasure island coves, rocky cliffs and a huge cement parking lot where cars can park to enjoy this sand playground.

Above the beach along the hills are bluff top parks and homes that overlook the Pacific Ocean. Many a romantic proposal has been made on those grassy lawns above, or even down on the beach shown. And as folks age, they return to play cards and enjoy the day of sunshine or shade.

Where to stay:  Corona del Mar is equally situated between Newport Beach hotels to the north and Laguna Beach hotels to the south. Either direction, you can't lose for beach views.

Where to eat: What Corona del Mar lacks in hotels it makes up for in dining. From cafes, to Mexican and the very delicious steaks and prime at Five Crowns restaurant, Corona del Mar enjoys ample food and shopping.

What else?  Just up the street from the beach on Coast Highway in Corona del Mar you'll find the lovely Sherman Gardens. It's not one of the larger gardens such a Huntington Library and Gardens, but it's quite charming and worth a reasonable entry fee. Special events and teas, and a gift store with many flower-themed gifts make for a unique shopping experience.
