Classic California in Newport Beach at
Newport Pier
Newport
Beach--The picture above shows a classic
two-tone 1950's era Buick (probably a Buick Century). While all
of California's beach cities with piers, restaurants and shops
at one time could have been "class"-ified and as Classic
California because of their vibe which included pre-1970 cars,
piers and shops, many opted for tear down of the old, thus
removing the culture that surrounds the California beach
lifestyle. Newport Beach as of now in the 21st century has opted
to hang ten on its tried and true blue ways and favorite spots.
The neighborhood next to the Newport Pier (McFadden's Wharf)
includes an absolutely classic beach experience for locals and
tourists. Wander the pier, get your feet wet in the ocean, surf
a little, look for sea creatures in the rocks along the jetties
and grab a bit at Perry's Pizza, truly a classic restaurant.
Other old-time Cal Classics along this stretch include
Charlie's Chili, Mutt Lynch's Saloon, Blackie's by the Sea, and
Beach Ball. The sandwich and beer shops allow you to park your
classic car right at the beach (have some quarters for the
meter) and order a cool tall one as you bikini watch, or bring
the kids for a sandwich and some family fun.
Now this is how California got its reputation as a beach
destination!
Other Classic California beach towns include
Pismo Beach,
San Diego's Ocean, Pacific and Mission Beaches, Oceanside,
Encinitas, Santa Barbara, and Santa Cruz.
