Are you a
budding artist who's not quite defined yourself as
an artist just yet? There's an exhibit that allows
you to add a "showing" to your resume--minus the
pesky qualifications most galleries require. For a
fee of around $20, you are guaranteed a spot on the
wall at the Huntington Beach Art Center (first come
first serve.)
This offer
only happens once a year, however. Normally
announced in Oct - December annually, a call for
non-juried art (maximum several pieces) goes out
across the Internet, and appears in City of
Huntington Beach publications, requesting
individuals show up with their works and payment on
a specific day to be part of "Centered on the
Center" art show.
Over a decade
old, this event continues to grow in popularity and
now fills up fast, reaching capacity in just a short
time.
In the picture
above you can see a wall filled with artwork from
the exhibit. You can also see a gent in a hat taking
a digital photo of his artwork displayed. The
lion from the "Wizard of Oz", a woman playing a
guitar, a lady decked out in a fancy dress and black
stockings and black hat or umbrella, several people
walking on the Huntington Beach Pier with Ruby's
Diner in the background, and many additional
paintings and art pieces can be seen. Providing a
sampling of what you can expect at this event, this
is by no means the only artist opportunity. By
joining the HB Art League, artists can also sign up
and pay a fee to show their works at a small "Corner
Gallery" in Huntington Beach Central Library, or at
Huntington Beach Civic Center City Hall building.
While
professional galleries are limited to just a handful
in the city, and premier art showings and contests
are rare, the amateur category opportunities are
abundant throughout the year.
