Analysis: Tourists from
around the globe complain about the winter and even summer temperatures of
the Pacific Ocean in California. While the majority of the population living
in California live within 50 miles of the coast, and the cool water temps
help to provide some of the finest air temperatures along the coast
throughout the seasons, the water is, indeed, chilly. That's why (out of
necessity), some great companies such as O'Neill out of Santa Cruz began the
modern day wet suit designs that allow visitors, locals and surfers to be in
the water anytime.
You'll notice from the
chart above that the warmest temperatures average out to around 72 degrees
in the southernmost beach regions next to the Mexico (Tijuana) border in San
Diego, during the month of August. While we've seen temps get a little
warmer in the past year or so (up to around 75), winter time does average in
the low 60's and 50's. Santa Barbara / Ventura is where the water
starts getting into the comfort zone during the summer months, and where
you'll find people going to escape the inland heat.
