Bolsa Chica
Wetlands Ecological Reserve in
Huntington Beach experienced a remodel and open house to the
public with new exhibits, fish tanks, and hands-on
learning opportunities.
If you mention
birds in Huntington Beach, the first thing that
comes to mind is the
Bolsa Chica wetlands. Everybody in town knows
about it and can't escape the the beauty of this
bird-friendly place while driving past it on Pacific
Coast Highway between Newport Beach and Sunset
Beach.
The place
isn't just friendly to birds...it is the very home
that helps keep many alive, giving them a place to
land and rest, to fly and catch a fish and to
survive.
Over a decade
ago a portable trailer was added to the perimeter of
the place where the the Huntington Harbour bridge on
Warner Avenue crosses over the channel that feeds
into the wetlands. It's all connected in one way or
another, but until recently Interpretive
Center visitors had to walk over the busy street
bridge on Warner to gain access to the wetlands main
trails. For the thousands of students that come
annually on class assignments or field trips, the
path just didn't work well.
A new
walkbridge will connect this small learning
center with the 1.5 mile loop trail by June of 2008.
When visiting
Huntington Beach or if living there, be sure to drop
by the Interpretive Center and see what it's all
about. A small gift shop often sells fund raiser
items such as a calendar with beautiful pictures of
birds representing each month of the year.
