Balboa Island Museum Archive Committee, Newport Beach, CA
Balboa Island,
California--Thanks to a new committee of volunteers at the
Balboa Island Historical Museum, the region is on its way to expertly
preserving photos, newspaper articles, and important artifacts of the
manmade island's history, one document at a time. The museum overlooking
the Newport harbor recently funded archival materials and has begun the
process of cataloguing and protecting its growing collection that
provides a glimpse into the island's history.
The Archival Committee meets every other
week to organize and place documents and photos into archival envelopes
as the collection continues to grow through donations from residents,
former residents, visitors, and estates that bequest their historically
significant materials to the nonprofit group for posterity.
Established approximately 10 years ago, the
Balboa Island Museum is volunteer based and includes the talents of
former library archivists such as Alice Dear, who not only worked as a
school teacher and librarian in Newport Beach, but also has assisted in
the library collections and nearby Sherman Library and Gardens.
