Balboa Island Sugar N Spice Frozen
Bananas
Balboa Island--Sugar
N Spice since 1945.
There's nothing quite like a beach confection offered in Newport
on Balboa Island's Marine Avenue. Visits to Balboa bring back
memories to some who have eaten frozen chocolate dipped bananas
since 1945 when the store opened. If you remember those days,
you have to be over 60 years young now. The original owners of
the shop for 50 years sold it but the tradition was fortunately
preserved and today, Sugar N Spice continues to serve island
favorites.
Memories fade. Some faintly recall sitting at Balboa's beaches
and digging sand crabs, or figuring out how to build the best
sand castle with only limited tools and your imagination.
But the frozen banana really sticks in the minds of those who
have ordered this treat on a stick throughout the years. Dipped
in a thick, rich chocolate, then rolled in nuts or candy
coatings, they come in four sizes--small, medium, large and
Xlarge. Small is the a good option of you just want to sample
this local delicacy for the first time. Prices on last check
were around $2.50-3.50.
Other treats sold at the shop where there's a nice wooden bench
out front where you can sit and people watch include soft serve
ice cream, shakes, smoothies, malts, floats, freezes and ice
blended drinks, hot fudge or ice cream sundaes, banana splits,
brownie sundaes, drum sticks, Balboa bars and a variety of ice
cream flavors. For more serious eating, there's also cheese on a
stick, hot dogs, corn dogs and pretzels.
Located on the quintessential Main Street USA, frozen bananas
are easy to spot because of the huge sign at the small shop with
a window front guests order from.
