The picture above is one
of our all-time favorites. You just gotta love these people all spread out
along the sand. Stretched in beach chairs, on lawn chairs, and umbrellas
lighting up the hair, the woman on the lawn chair has a bit of tummy, to put
it nicely. The scene is reminiscent of so many European beach scenes where
the Germans (especially) tend to by stout and not minding the audience at
the beach one bit.
The beach shown above is
the main stretch of sand on Avalon, Catalina's most populated locale and the
primary destination for island beach vacations in Southern California. A row
of shops runs behind the sand and adjacent pier on this crowded little
beach. The beach is small, the waters are gentle and kids and adults all
love basking in the sunshine on a trip to Catalina Island. Who can blame
them.
All the needs are served
in one central location. From this little beach you can wander a few feet
for food, for coffee and drinks, for shopping and for hotels. It's truly
small town living and vacationing on the little island in the Pacific just
20 some miles offshore of cities
Newport Beach,
Long Beach and
Dana Point.
Those cities all offer daily boat excursions to Catalina Island.
Where to stay on this
island gem is up to you. Many small hotels don't participate in online book
systems and they also lack AAA ratings. One hotel we have visited and like
is the
Catalina Canyon Resort & Spa. It is the only resort, spa hotel on
the island that we are aware of.
