Beach Volleyball is available for play at California beaches
with many concessions renting volleyballs. In California
especially, sand volleyball is a top sport with nets
available on beaches throughout the state.
California beach volleyball
began in Santa Monica in the 1920's and grew up there with
the genesis of tournament play. Becoming an official
competition in the 1996 Olympics has helped catapult this
sport with larger sponsors and dollars. San Diego, San Clemente, Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, Huntington Beach,
Long Beach, Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach,
Venice, Santa Monica, Ventura, Oxnard, Santa Barbara and
Santa Cruz are but a few of the beaches with nets available
for play. One of the top touring special events in sand
volleyball is the Association of Volleyball Professionals
on the beach AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tournament. It
features Olympic greats and professionals such as Karch
Kiraly, Misty May and more. It's quite exciting to watch.
There was a ruckus for a time over the girl's portion of the
competition. To stir excitement in females competing, the
ladies were given bikinis to wear with almost a g-string
pant bottom that many objected to. Several years have past
and the women are no longer required to wear skimpy swim
suits when they play. The do wear swim wear in bright colors
but when you watch their muscular bodies, you hardly notice
the outfits they are wearing. They are in such excellent
physical condition and are such superb players that you are
mesmerized by their game. For beginners, intermediate or
pros, just drop by a local beach concessionaire to rent a
ball if you don't have one. You can enjoy the feel of sand
volleyball. It's a game where the sand flies and the fall is
a bit softer than the hard gym floor. Below, however, we've
listed a variety of volleyball tours, competitions and
courts in California.
