Anaheim is one of the 10 largest cities in California
and attracts millions of annual guests (around 15 million in 1999) to Disneyland
and to conventions held at the Anaheim Convention Center.
Anaheim was established by German immigrants in 1857 as
a wine producing colony for the rapidly growing town of Los Angeles.
The city's German name means "Home on the Ana (River)." Vineyards and wineries
flourished until the 1880's when they were destroyed by plant disease.
Oranges replaced grapes and became the favored fruit in a county named
Orange.
