Pancho
Frijoles in Sunset Beach, Calif.
Sunset Beach, Calif.--If you're driving along Coast Highway
in Sunset Beach and you feel like a
treat, stop by Pancho Frijoles,
featuring hearty Mexican faire, catering
and cafe dining. Perhaps you think
the guy in the photo above looks
familiar. He's been a Huntington Beach
restaurateur for many years, serving up
similar dishes in his Linda's Mexican
restaurant at Bolsa Chica near Warner
Ave. Nick and his family love to cook,
and they are known for their dishes that
don't hold back on fresh ingredients,
extensive use of fresh cheeses, fresh
tortillas, and crispy lettuce, tomato,
great salsa, and other things you expect
from a Mexican restaurant.
The
day I went into Pancho Frijoles I was
with a friend. We pulled over on an
impulse just to check it out. We didn't
think we were going to eat there. We
just wanted to poke our heads in because
we drove by it so many times. But on
stepping in the door, a welcoming Nick
greeted us. As luck would have it, he
was the owner and was able to extol all
the reasons we should try it out. I had
just received bad news, and wasn't
feeling like spending much money. But
much to my surprise, the taco a la carte
was just a few bucks (shown in the photo
above.) I went for it, and was happily
surprised that the food was quite
delicious, and affordable.
My
friend's bill was a whole lot more,
however. Why? While the a la carte
items are quite affordable, when you add
up extra such as rice and beans (that I
don't normally eat), your end up
spending $10 or more on lunch! They
serve breakfast all day, have an
extensive menu, and one our visit,
offered fresh squeezed watermelon
beverage. I didn't try it, but may some
time. Omelets, breakfast burritos, and
menudo are made fresh daily
