The thrill of a triathlon
allows those who work and exercise to participate in three
different sports that included swimming, bicycling and running.
While some excel in one particular type of triathlon event, it's
the person who can do will in all three that takes home of the
prize. California claims the prize for the first triathlon held
in 1974 at Mission Bay. San Diego Track Club hosted the
Mission Bay Triathlon in September 1974. 46 athletes for
something that was initially a spin-off for marathon
competition. Ironman Triathlon was the modern day competition
for any thiathlete hoping to qualify and compete in what was
considered the premier event for those willing to devote hours
daily to training.
2.4-mile swim, 112 mile
bike ride, and a 26.2 mile run. Gordon Haller was the first
thiathlete to win Iron Man in 1978. It took him 11 hours, 46
minutes, and 58 seconds to win the course against 14 other
competitors.
International Triathlon
Union (ITU) was founded in 1989 as the international governing
body of the sport, and it shortened the marathon runs to create
a more recognized event adopted by the Olympic Games. Sydney
Games in 2000 was the first Olympic event to see a
Triathlon. The course included 1500 meter swim, 40 km bike and
10 km run.
